“Flight simulators” for hospitals – Practice makes perfect!

Abstract:
Capt. “Sully” landed his disabled plane on the Hudson safely because he had practiced similar landings on a flight simulator. Healthcare personnel need similar training opportunities for rare but critical events as well as for routine activities. We will visit CliniSpace™ – a next generation online immersive training environment that replicates the familiar surroundings of daily work in a hospital – and we will explore the environment and practice stabilizing a trauma patient who is bleeding severely. These types of environments and simulations support training in clinical decision making, communication skills, and protocols for critical events as well as routine care.

Bios:
Parvati Dev, PhD, leads Innovation in Learning Inc., developing simulation-based learning in immersive online environments. Her background includes a doctorate in electrical engineering, research in computational neuroscience and in 3D medical imaging, and eighteen years as director of the SUMMIT lab at Stanford University School of Medicine.
